The Steven Walter Endowment Fund

In his final days after a heroic eight-year fight with cancer, Steven Walter, aged 19, wrote a powerful letter to his family and friends asking them to raise money for childhood cancer research “so that one day no other kid would have to go through what I’ve been through”.

Since he passed in 2000, the Steven Walter Laboratory has been conducting pioneering research to search for a cure for childhood cancer. Led by Professor Glenn Marshall, the research investigates prevention of child cancer, better treatment, and ultimately a cure.

The Steven Walter Endowment Fund provides ongoing and sustainable contributions to the vital cancer research undertaken at the Steven Walter Laboratory. Donations to this fund are endowed and distributions are made to the Steven Walter Laboratory on an annual basis. This ensures the longevity of funding to research undertaken at the Steven Walter Laboratory.

The focus of this vital research for diagnoses, treatment and prevention all boils down to one theme: INDIVIDUALISED CANCER CARE.

• Whether in detection, prevention or treatment, the aim is to localise the specific risks unique to each child’s genetics and environment and tailor a treatment plan that is uniquely comprehensive for a child’s cancer care.   

• The research required to give kids the care they deserve cannot be found trickling down from adult research studies. They need specialised individual attention, which occurs with single cell analytics.?? 

• Your donation will help identify the subclones existing in the cancerous cells within kids with cancer and use combination therapies to target all the factors driving the cancer, not just the most common ones addressed by the ‘one size fits all’ approach.
