I'm holding an event to raise funds for The Cystic Fibrosis Clinic at CHW

For the past 30 years I have had the absolute privilege to work with literally hundreds of families, children and adults, with Cystic fibrosis (CF). During those years I have asked parents to do things that are hard, heartbreaking and, at times, near on impossible. I have asked children to do things no child should have to do and I have watched, with their parents, as some of them do all we ask of them but just get sicker and to be blunt, sadly die.

It is rare now for children with CF to die however what has not changed is the burden of having to do treatments EVERY SINGLE DAY for your whole life if you want to slow the progression of this illness.

Once I tried to do it all, now I know how important a psychologist in our clinic is. Helping parents navigate those early traumatic days, helping young children cope with painful, invasive procedures and helping teenagers find themselves among the illness ….. all these things take a professional.

That is why this May I am Challenging myself, like CF challenges my families. I will be walking 5km per day, 5 days per week, for the month of May. I am doing this as if we as a clinic do not raise the money needed to keep our psychologist then we will no longer have one. I can’t imagine a clinic now without access to this vital service and will fight as hard as I can, along with many families in our clinic, to keep it.
