A year ago Sid received his bone marrow transplant, and this week we're celebrating Sid's recovery, and thanking his donor and his medical teams.
As many of you know, Sid's diagnosis of cerebral adrenoleukodystrophy came out of the blue. It was a devastating blow at the time, but the burden of pain and fear we felt was lightened by the speed at which the teams at SCH pulled together the diagnosis, prepared a plan for treatment, and sourced a stem cell donor after a global search.
We knew a bone marrow transplant was a big deal, but we had no idea we would spend 128 days in hospital! Sid had so many complications, and I think we met just about every team at SCH - usually without any wait and often before we even realised we needed to see them.
As Sid's gut problems persisted, our team twice applied for new, rare, expensive drugs to try to resolve the issues and get Sid home. Twice we got the go ahead without any delays (even over Christmas) and without any need for appeals.
Every dollar we raise will ensure that other kids and families who find themselves facing an unexpected health crisis get the same world class, award-winning level of care.
