Together, we can cure homesickness

3 July 2019

In an Australian first, new fundraising initiative Curing Homesickness is bringing together Children’s Hospitals from around Australia in one unified mission: to get kids home from hospital sooner.

No matter the reason for being in hospital, one thing unites all sick kids - the wish to be at home with their families.

Whether a child is in hospital for one night, one month, or even longer, the unsettling experience of any illness or injury is amplified by being away from the comforts of home.

Fifty percent of children in hospital have been reported to suffer from moderate to high levels of homesickness and coming together to tackle this on behalf of all sick kids across Australia is an urgent cause we are proud to be a part of.

Nicola Stokes, CEO at Sydney Children’s Hospitals Foundation said, “We know that kids get homesick when they are in hospital, but homesickness isn’t always recognised as a serious complication of illness, and this is the first time it has been the focus of a fundraising campaign to address it.”

The launch of our ambitious campaign is kicked off with the fictional story of ‘Ali’. This beautiful short film tells the all too familiar story of a little girl who in her time of illness just really misses her Mum’s ‘Pasta Sause’.  With celebrity cameos and the power of one viral note, the film shows how we can do our very best to cure homesickness, together.

We are hoping that life will imitate art, and with the power of community and the Aussie spirit, we can get as many kids’ home where they belong as soon as we can.

Supporting Curing Homesickness means helping us to diagnose, treat and prevent childhood illness and injury through new research, technology and facilities. But just as importantly, the funds can go to help each hospital create as warm and comforting an environment as it can be, to make any time away from home as pleasant as possible.

Until now, Children’s hospitals around Australia have raised funds separately. For this campaign we are coming together, along with Australia’s favourite brands and celebrities.

Because kids don’t belong in hospital, they belong at home.
