1.5 million reasons to celebrate

5 April 2021

The end of March may mark the official wrap up of our 32nd Bandaged Bear Appeal, but the communities’ impact has left a lasting paw- print on paediatric care at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead. It’s thanks to our amazing supporters, that we’ve raised an unBEARlievable $1,547,114.40 for sick kids at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead.

After an incredibly challenging year, NSW rallied together once again to help ensure sick kids continue to receive the best possible care – no matter where they live or what their condition is. Over five activity-filled weeks, we saw fundraisers host some amazing events in support of this great cause:

  • 22 teddy bear picnics
  • 17 Bandaged Bear merchandise kits sold by schools
  • 15 Bunnings BBQs
  • 8 train station activations
  • A 100km run

The family of this year’s Bandaged Bear Appeal ambassador, Durakai, decided to throw the ultimate 7th birthday party for him, with all of Dubbo on the guest list. The close-knit community united and watched on as his Mum, Uncle, Nan and Pop all shaved their heads to raise vital funds for the staff at the Hospital, who not that long ago helped save Durakai’s life – raising an incredible $3,781.

“The team at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead went above and beyond to save our son’s life. Without them, we wouldn’t have Durakai. That’s why I shaved my head, to raise money for the Appeal and give back to those who did so much for us and the other kids in hospital,” shares Brinae, Durakai’s mum.

To the wonderful volunteers who donated 1,908 hours of their time, the shoppers at Costco who purchased ‘wish tokens’ and to the kids who donated their pocket money- thank you! Together, with our generous corporate partners including NSW Fire & Rescue and Sydney Trains, we’ve achieved an incredible result for the staff, kids and their families at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead.

It’s thanks to your support and this year’s inspiring patient ambassadors – Durakai, Brayden and Vishwa- that we can help fund more lifesaving equipment, vital research and world-class services for patients in need – now and into the future.
