Children like Ava urgently need your help.

Please make a donation to our Equipment Appeal now and help save more little lives.

“I heard Ava screaming in her room. I ran in and found her struggling to breathe with her eyes rolling into the back of her head and her lips turning blue.” That’s how the nightmare started for first-time mum, Jen.

“I’ll never forget the sense of panic. I really thought we were going to lose her. But we did what any parent would do, we put her in the car and drove her to the Emergency Department of the Hospital at Randwick.”

Jen and her husband, Tony, knew what most parents and grandparents know, if you want the best medical healthcare for your children, you can rely on Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick.

Providing world-class healthcare takes two things: world-class medics; and world-class equipment. We already have some of the best doctors in the world. But today, we urgently need your help to buy new essential equipment.

To accomplish this we must raise $120,000.

When Jen and Tony arrived at our Emergency Department, they had no idea what was coming, as Tony recalls...

“We genuinely thought she'd just swallowed something. It didn't really register that it could be something else. But at the Hospital they were saying, ‘there's nothing there.’ They couldn't find anything in her airways.”

Jen and her husband, Tony, knew what most parents and grandparents know, if you want the best medical healthcare for your children, you can rely on Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick.

Ava’s doctors ran tests including an X-ray that revealed Ava’s left lung cavity had filled with fluid, which caused her lung to collapse. But what had caused the build up of fluid?

More tests were ordered, including an immediate CT scan, and that’s when Ava’s team discovered the truth that turned Jen and Tony’s lives upside down, Ava had a five-and-a-half centimetre tumour in her abdomen. A neuroblastoma. Worse, the cancer had spread to her bones. Worse again, part of the tumour was entwined around her spine.

As Tony recalls...

“We were in a state of utter, utter shock. The first thing I thought was, ‘she’s six months old, she's got cancer, she’s going to die!’ It was just a surreal feeling of emptiness.”

While Jen and Tony were still struggling to take in what was happening to their beautiful little baby, Ava’s doctors knew exactly what had to be done.

Within the hour they had a step-by-step plan in place to treat Ava’s tumour and save her life. And they went straight to work, doing what they do best. Since that day Ava has been through five years of treatment including intensive chemotherapy and three surgeries. Although there were many ups and downs, Ava has been given the all clear her parents prayed for so long.

And every step of the way her treatment relied on critically important equipment like the equipment we need your help to buy today.

Children like Ava deserve the best care. They deserve the best doctors. And they deserve the best, most up-to-date equipment too.
